MAINTAINING PEAK PERFORMANCE THROUGH DISK DEFRAGMENTATION

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/library/technologies/other/defrag.asp

This article presents an overview of disk fragmentation and related issues, and explains the functionality of Disk Defragmenter, the manual defragmentation utility included with Windows 2000.

PROBLEM: What's the fastest way to create a named range in Excel?

SOLUTION: First select the cell or range of cells you want to name. Then click on the "Name Box" control. This control is located in the upper-left area of the worksheet display (when you hover your mouse over it the tooltip reads "Name Box"). It is a combo box control that sits above the grid's display of column headers (directly above the "A" column). In a new worksheet it always reads "A1." Once you've selected the Name Box, type the desired name and press Enter.

PROBLEM: After installing IomegaWare, even though you told it not to start automatically with Windows, your system seems to take a bit longer to boot.

SOLUTION: This is because IomegaWare (in a "complete install" configuration) starts five separate components in the background when Windows starts, even if you have told IomegaWare itself not to start with Windows. Use Windows' built-in System Configuration Utility to streamline your boot time. The steps are: Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information, then go to the Microsoft System Information Tools menu and choose System Configuration Utility. (Alternately just run Msconfig.exe.) Click on the StartUp tab and scroll down the list. Clear the following check boxes: Iomega Startup Options, IomegaWare, Iomega Disk Icons, QuikSync, and Iomega Backup Scheduler. Now click OK, and when prompted "Do you want to restart your computer now?" click Yes.

HINTS

Close Folders Quickly!
I f you like to have each folder open in its own window but hate having to close each and every one of those windows when you're done, here's a quick tip to tidy up the clutter. Simply hold down the Shift key while clicking the Close icon in the final folder's top-right corner. This closes the folder and all its parent folders.

You can use this trick at any level in the folder hierarchy. For instance, if you open the following series of folders:

My Documents\Correspondence\Current Year\Personal\Family

you can close all five folders by Shift-Closing the Family folder. Alternatively, you can leave the Personal and Family folders open while closing the other three by Shift-Closing the Current Year folder.

By the way, if you want to change the way Windows displays folders, you can access the folder options in Windows 95 by selecting Options from the View Menu in any folder window, then clicking the Folder tab. In Windows 98, select Folder Options from the View Menu, click Settings on the General tab, and adjust the options. In Windows Me, select Folder Options from the Tools Menu and choose the appropriate options in the General tab.
